I have found that having the correct size needle for the thread being used helps a lot. If the needle is large and the thread fine or vise versa, it will not sew properly. Another thing is the right type of needle for the fabric you are using. There are different types of needles and if you don't have the right one for the right purpose your machine will not sew at all. Sounds like it needs a quick trip to the sewing machine doc for cleaning and adjustment. Before you take it, though, disassemble the bobbin case area and pull the throat plate and clean the bobbin case and shuttle and around the feed dogs.
Up and Down Needle button won't work or reverse button Up/down button pushed does nothing. Reverse button pushed/needle goes up and down in same place. When the fabric does not move then the feed dogs under the needle plate need to be checked to see if there up or down. For a timing problem,, the feeddogs may need to be checked to see why they are not moving the fabric thru the machine.
